What is a Facial?

Caring for our face is very important; it needs to be protected it from a range of harmful agents- the sun, dust, sweat, pollution and more. One practical way to do this is with a facial.

A facial is an exclusive cleansing of the face, intended primarily to remove dead skin cells. Before any treatment you should always be makeup-free. The facial begins with a manual exfoliation, which essentially ‘drags the dead cells’ off. This process can also be done chemically; this is called a “glycolic acid exfoliation”.

And as we know, there are different types of skin: normal, oily, dry, mixed and sensitive. This is why you should always balance the skin’s PH with a toner to leave it harmonized. Then come the capsules of serums- they can be nourishing, anti-aging, moisturizing or oxygenating; these help to diminish expression lines. Finally, a sunscreen is applied to leave the skin ready for any environment or even to apply makeup; sometimes facial masks are also applied.

Don’t forget to let your esthetician know if you are receiving dermatological treatment for any skin issue- certain facials can cause an adverse reaction when mixed with your prescription medicine. If you suffer from allergies it is also very important to make this known– you may be able to take advantage of an all-natural or organic facial that has the same benefits without the use of processed products.

Experts recommend starting a monthly facial treatment at the age of 16 in order to protect and hydrate the skin for the years to come. If you haven’t started yet, don’t worry. Look for a Spa where you can have a facial and enjoy radiant skin.

Don’t forget to cleanse your skin every day and leave us a comment about your favorite cleansing ritual.
